  There are three positions coming up in the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum in the Repatriation Office.

  The first is an osteologist position, the second is a repatriation review committee coordinator and collections management position, the third is the position of program manager for the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History Repatriation Program. The position descriptions follow.

DUTIES: Participates in a program to assess biological attributes of collections of human remains potentially subject to repatriation, working within established policies and procedures for the collection, maintenance, and research use of data collected.  Records biological information from skeletal remains, including age at death, sex, population affinity, paleopathology, and other biological attributes to relate existing skeletal collections to contemporary Native American groups.  Follows Repatriation Laboratory standards for the capture and computer entry of biological information from human remains.  Provides complete osteological descriptions and documentation data.  Searches records in the Physical Anthropology Division, Smithsonian Libraries, Smithsonian Collections, and other sources to gather historical and technical information for documentation.  Assists repatriation-related visitors to the Office and assists in the response to inquiries related to the repatriation of biological collections.  Trains other employees, interns, etc., in documentation and inventory techniques as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.  Specialized experience is experience directly related to the biological and osteological assessment of human remains.  Examples of qualifying experience include experience in forensic anthropology, especially preparing forensic case reports, evaluating and reporting on human remains subject to repatriation, academic research in skeletal biology, paleopathology, or human osteology, or other experience related to the position to be filled.  Education may be substituted for the required specialized experience as follows: Two (2) full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or masters or equivalent graduate degree related to the position to be filled.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also qualifying.

Selective Factors:  (Applicants must meet all of these mandatory requirements in order to be considered qualified to compete for a position.)
1 Knowledge of physical anthropology, especially osteology, human skeletal biology, and paleopathology.
2 Knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of library, archival and collection research.
3 Knowledge of North American archeology.

1 Knowledge, demonstrated by education and/or experience, in physical anthropology, especially human skeletal biology and the related sub-disciplines of paleopathology or skeletal demography.
2 Skill in writing and/or editing osteological reports and/or publications.
3 Skill in archival or research methods.
4 Knowledge of North American archeology.
5 Knowledge of museum practices, including inventorying or cataloging.

DUTIES: As the liaison between the Repatriation Review Committee (RRC) and the Repatriation Office
(RO), incumbent provides administrative and technical support to the RRC members and coordinates all
interactions between the RRO, the RO, the Department of Anthropology and the Office of the Director.
Coordinates the planning, logistics, official recording and followup of the RRC meetings. Prepares
deaccession paperwork related to repatriation deaccessioning including shipping invoices, shipping
inventories, Memoranda of Deaccession, notification of repatriation memos, and deaccession packets.
Works with staff involved in the packing and shipping of deaccessioned collections. Coordinates and
facilitates regular communication with the Chairperson and other members of the RRC, between the
RRC and the Smithsonian Institution (SI), and groups outside SI. Communication involves
correspondence, memoranda, electronic mail, facsimile transmission and the telephone. Coordinates
and analyzes data; drafts, edits, and produces Repatriation Office reports, particularly the annual report
of the RO and RRC on the progress of the repatriation process.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to
the next lower grade level which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and
which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully
the duties of the position. Education may be substituted for the required specialized experience as
follows: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related. Equivalent combinations of experience and
education are qualifying.

DUTIES: Incumbent plans, implements, coordinates and supervises the documentation, deaccession,
and repatriation of Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of
cultural patrimony. Responsible for the coordination and oversight of all aspects of the administration of
the Repatriation Office (RO), including preparation of yearly budgets, fund management, personnel
administration, correspondence and record keeping. Engages in frequent and highly visible consultation
with both the Native American and scholarly community and is the Museum's principal spokesperson on
issues related to repatriation and its many collateral activities. Monitors progress reports by RO
anthropologists on collections, making sure reports are completed in a timely fashion and contain all
relevant historical/archeological information and accession/catalogue data necessary to address
questions of the degree of cultural association between collections and extant Native American groups.
Incumbent is involved in the interpretation and implementation of federal legislation and Smithsonian
Institution policy pertaining to the repatriation of North American Indian collection.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent
to the next lower grade level which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and
