The Chemical Microscopy of Art and Artifacts
with Walter C. McCrone
January 10-14, 2000
Course Fee:  $900
Registration Deadline:  December 8, 1999

This one-week intensive workshop, based on chemical microscopy applied to
the identification of materials of art and archaeology, is intended for
conservation and art history professionals interested in technical aspects
of works of art such as pigment and fiber analysis.

Students will learn each technique through lectures, demonstrations, and
hands-on laboratory practice.

Topics to be covered include:
Day 1:  Proper use of the microscope and its components, illumination,
micrometry, contrast and resolving power, crystal morphology,
and microchemical tests.
Day 2:  Crystal optics, crossed polars, fiber analysis (samplings,
mounting, identification).
Day 3:  Identification of pigments, media, surface coatings, glues, and
pastes.
Day 4:  Study of paintings, microminiaturization and analytical
procedures.
Day 5:  Photomicrography, how to select a microscope and accessories,
special studies, questions and discussion.

A certificate will be awarded by the McCrone Research Institute upon
successful completion of the course assignments.

How to register:  Early application is recommended to ensure a place, as
enrollment is limited.  The application deadline is December 8, 1999.
Late applications will be accepted if space allows.  To apply, send a
brief
letter of intent including relevant education and employment experience,
and the applicability of this course to your work.  The information will
assist the instructor in shaping the workshop to fit the participants'
needs.

A deposit of $100 is required to reserve a place.  Please make checks
payable to New York University.  Payment of the remaining balance is due
by the first day of class.  Meals, housing, and minor travel costs
associated with field trips are not included in the tuition fee.

Notices of acceptance will be sent after December 8.

Partial financial assistance is available for qualified applicants who
would otherwise be unable to take the course.  To apply for financial aid,
please include with your application a statement of financial need, and,
where appropriate, a letter from your organization endorsing your
request.
