I have had the undersatnding that in the early to mid 19th century,
probably other periods too, genearlly people did not own near the amount of
clothes that we do today.  They may have had 2-3 sets of clothing only.
This did not warrant a closet.  Therefore bureaus, trunks, etc. were used
to store the clothing.
