I have seen enough instances of degraded monofilament breaking that I am
very shy about using it for weight bearing support, but if an assured
yearly schedule for replacement with fresh mono could be set up, I feel
that it will perform as required. However, the recommendation of fine
plastic coated stainless cable with small swaged fastenings is a more
secure solution that has little more visual weight.

The other point that has not been brought up in this discussion is that
of the concentration of load applied by this sort of very fine and
strong material. Depending on the overall object weight, and the
underlying structure and material, the force applied by a very fine line
can indent the surface, or provide insufficient structural support to
the object leading to gradual sagging damage. I would highly recommend
sheathing the mono or cable at the point of weight bearing with felt,
non PVC tubing, or other appropriate material to spread the load. Making
sure there are sufficient points of support will relieve the tendency to
sag as well as reduce the individual load on any one point.
