      DUTY LOCATION: Washington, DC

DUTIES: The incumbent performs curatorial tasks in the history of military
aircraft technology including scholarly and technical research on artifacts and
aerospace history, exhibits development, participation in public service
efforts, and the development of the collection of aeronautical artifacts.
Conducts scholarly research in the history of military aircraft technology,
consulting with experts and principal historical figures. Research problems are
long-term and of major scope, and broken down into research projects which are
themselves significant and result in publishable additions to the body of
knowledge. Develops over-all exhibit plans and performs documentary research,
coordination with exhibit designers, and writing of scripts. Has primary
responsibility for a major collection of military aircraft and has operational
experience with and an understanding of the significance of specific artifacts
and of methods of handling, restoration, preservation, and storage. Selects
items for accession to ensure the significance of the collections, and is
responsible for the safe acquisition of designated aircraft. Responds by
correspondence and phone to public inquiries, meets with visitors who have
questions, and offers papers and lectures on subject specialities. Serves as
expert and consultant on professional matters relating to the history of
aircraft technology, which includes reviewing research proposals, manuscripts,
and public materials, answering public inquiries, lecturing to professional
organizations, and serving on committees with other scholars in the field.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position has a basic requirement for a full four year
course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's
degree in museum work or in an appropriate subject matter field, or four years
of experience, or a combination of education and experience that provided
knowledge and ability comparable to that normally acquired through successful
completion of a four year course of study. In addition to the basic requirement,
candidates must have at least 1 year of professional experience quivalent to the
next lower grade for which application is made.

1.  Skill in conducting scholarly historical research into the development of
military aviation technology.
2.  Knowledge of the operation of aircraft, including piloting, aircraft
maintenance and ground handling.

determine who are the highest qualified candidates among those who meet the
selective factors.)
1.  Skill in conducting scholarly historical research into the development of
military aviation technology.
2.  Knowledge of the operation of aircraft, including piloting, aircraft
maintenance and ground handling.
3.  Knowledge of museum policies and practices in managing and documenting
artifacts in a museum collection.
4.  Skill in the use of software programs that relate to the documentation of
artifacts in a museum collection.
5.  Skill in organizing research, exhibits, or collections programs or projects,
to include planning, scheduling and logistics.
