Internship for Summer 1999
      A 16 week period, beginning in late May.
Applications will be reviewed as received.

General Museum Intern
The Brattleboro Museum & Art Center seeks an intern to assist in education
programs, work on exhibits, and provide general administrative support to
the staff. This position gives a student interested in museum work the
opportunity to experience a wide variety of museum functions.  This range of
training can only be offered in a small museum where departments are not
separated and the staff and volunteers work as a team to produce and hang
exhibits.

Education
Education work may include communication with teachers, designing previsit
materials for classes, writing teacher's newsletter, setting up for and
staffing public lectures, assisting Saturday family programs, and writing
press releases.
Interns will also participate in program evaluation.

Administration
General administrative assistance will include telephone answering, greeting
visitors, record keeping, fundraising,
publicity, etc.

Exhibits
Work behind the scenes on the installation, deinstallation, and up-keep of
exhibits; serve as a substitute gallery guide; do general light museum
maintenance projects; assist with registrar duties; help with openings and
public functions and more. Interns attend all Exhibition Committee meetings.
The summer 1999 intern will work with two exhibits opening in early August:
contemporary painting and twentieth century architecture.
The student applying for this position should have a background art history
or applied arts.  People with technical skills (carpentry, painting, paste
up, decorating, stage design etc.) will receive strong consideration.   Any
interested student may apply if he or she is a quick learner/ problem solver
and willing to undertake a wide variety of tasks.   Applicants should have
good communication skills and should be ale to compose a letter quickly and
easily.

Stipend
The internship offers a stipend of $750 for 16 weeks.   Room and board are
not included however BMAC staff will assist interns in becoming acquainted
with the community should they need housing.   A car is not necessary for
the job but public transportation into or out of Brattleboro is limited.
