I think that it is important to consider this issue, especially when
children are involved.  My son's boyscout troop and youth leadership
training at the YMCA have what is called a "Three's Company" policy, where
there must be three people present as a minimum at all times.  If a child is
in the mix, you can determine for yourself what the appropriate age for the
"tag-along" person must be.

We often have smaller classrooms come with only one teacher, which means
that our docents and myself often are alone with kids.  I have also taught
after school at different schools where I am alone in the classroom.
Teachers are alone with their students - I'm not sure why this policy would
be necessary?
We do however have a policy that a staff member can't be alone in the
building with visitors - that there needs to be at least two museum
employees on site when the building has a public tour going on.
