Hello, everyone! This is my first week as a subscriber so I thought I'd join
the discussion about the MFA...

I have just graduated from the University of Denver with an MA in Art
History/Museum Studies. I'm not sure how that will look on my diploma (it's
in the mail!) but it is different from DU's MA in Anthropology/Museum
Studies. The departments are not officially connected and focus on different
aspects of museology. I "audited" classes in the other department (which is
how I learned about museum-l) and still keep in touch with my peers from
Anthro who staged an exhibit as their final project in contrast to a thesis
in which a museum topic was not required.

Now, to add a twist to the works, I conducted my research at the University
of Auckland ( I looked at how Pacific Islands identity is performed in urban
New Zealand.) For the past year, I have been on the outside looking into
the tertiary system. (I was officially enrolled at Denver and followed DU's
thesis guidelines, regulations, etc. including printing the final copy on
"letter" rather than A4 paper.)

But, to keep this short, I am now enrolled in an MLitt in the English
department. The degree is research only and can be feasibly completed in one
year. To my knowledge, an MLitt can be undertaken in any subject taught at
University and I think is comparable to the MPhil but AU doesn't offer MPhil
or if they do, it's so rare that someone enrols that you mostly get a blank
look at registry if you do, as is with the MLitt.

I decided to get this degree because I can pick up my MA research where I
left off and can be a true "Uni" student, learning the ins and outs of a
educational system different from the one I grew up with.

As far as I know, AU offers degrees higher than the PhD (someone might need
to explain this to me in more detail) such as Doctor of Laws and Doctor of
Literature but according to the catalogue wording, it is an exam for AU
graduates that have published extensively in their fields.

The PhD here is research only with no required coursework.

There might be one museum studies program at Victoria University in
Wellington, but I am not familiar with it.

Has anyone worked in several systems and run into a problem "translating"
degrees across the oceans?
