Working Title: HLATC Rehousing Assistant

Official title: RESEARCH SPECIALIST(T16DN) or ASSOC RESEARCH SPEC(T16FN)

Degree and area of specialization: BA degree in art history, museum or design studies.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: 2 years in project oversight position.
Being able to recognize artistic patterns, color, etc. are important.

Other qualifications needed:
Careful object handling skills of archival materials
Well-organized
Very detail-oriented
Ability to stand for long periods of time and the ability to climb ladders
Record keeping and data entry skills and familiarity with relational database software
Ability to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds

Principal duties:
The Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection is an integral part of the academic program of the School
of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin. The collection features 13,000 textiles and
costumes representing countless eras, places, and techniques, making it one of the largest
university textile collections in the United States.

The textiles are pieces of fabric (some small some large) from all over the world that represent the
types of textiles that are produced by various cultures. They are not "museum" or "Library"
specimens in that this is a working textile collection for our design students to study and do
research on to understand fabric construction methods, dye type, yarn type, bulk, weight, etc.
The Rehousing Assistant will work as part of the relocation team transferring textiles from archival
boxes to the space saver drawers and recording their location. This is a unique opportunity to gain
hands on experience in an uncommon archival setting.

Job duties include:
Planning space for textile placement, ordering supplies, maintaining records, moving textiles into
cabinets from archival boxes, oversee volunteers and student hourly employees.
The person in this position will assist with identifying textiles by artistic patterns, color, weave, etc.
and carefully sorting them into the appropriate group or era of matching textiles and then placing
them into storage. Many of the items are delicate and some items date back to very early
historical time periods and are rare.

Textile storage systems will need to be prepped to accept textiles and other fabric elements. This
involves carefully dusting and cleaning the storage system and cutting archival cloth material to
appropriate sizes to line the shelving and then transferring the textiles into them.
