Ah, but not all prayer is intercessory. Believers are to pray praise and
thanksgiving as well as ask for personal guidance and improvement.
Intercessory prayer (at least as I was taught) is to ask but add "not my
will by Thine" and accept the answer even if it is "no". Thus, God is
always in control. The idea so prevalent lately that if you pray the right
prayer you will get rich, famous, whatever-now that is blasphemous.

According to the Bible, if you have faith enough you could walk off the
cliff and arrive safely at the bottom (walking on water, moving mountains,
etc.). However, I am a firm believer in gravity. This really has the
making of a great NEW YORKER cartoon or perhaps the WHITTENBURG DOOR.

The problem regarding faith and scienc (or history or art) for all of us in
the area of public education and interpretation is that no matter how
carefully we put things, those that are open minded will read and/or listen
even if they disagree. Those that define their faith more narrowly and feel
compelled to change the world to agree with it will not listen to us no
matter how carefully we try to broach the material. Perhaps this sounds too
harsh but here in the history world, we are often unable to break people
away from nostalgia (yes, sod houses did have glass windows) to recognize
real history; people's religeous beliefs are going to be a lot harder to
confront than nostalgia.
