This may be a teeny bit off what you are looking for, but may be 
something to consider as well.

Years ago Colonial Williamsburg had a didactic exhibit in the old 
visitor center that was prepared by Ivor Noel Hume and his archaeology 
staff. They recreated a very impressive cross-section of a colonial 
well in-situ showing the stratigraphy and artifacts. it was in a case 
with a plexiglass front. It was one of the best visual  illustrations 
of straigraphy within a historical archaeological feature that I've 
seen, etiher before or since. Somthing in this spirit may beter serve 
as an introduction to the sort of interactive pit that you are planning.

   Hello All:

As part of our museum's upcoming expansion, we are planning to install 2
outdoor archaeology pits.  Currently, we are planning permanent, 
concrete
pits with trap doors.  We have some ideas about covering the closed trap
door with signage, and also having signage on the underside of the door,
to be viewed when the pit is in use.

I'm hoping for some input from members of the list re: archaeology pits

your facility, or other good ones that you have seen.  What works and 
what
doesn't?  If you could install them over again, what would you do
differently?  We would also be interested in seeing any images that you
might have of your archaeology pits, to better guide our planning.  In
particular, if you know of any good examples of archaeology pits within 
a
day's drive of central Texas, we would love to hear about them so that 
we
