I've also done research into digitalization, and most of what I've found
suggests that scanning is not a major danger to photographs.  In fact, for
the brief time the photo is on the scanner, once you have a digital image
you can utilize that digital image for public access and put away the
original image, where it can be protected from handling damage,
light/humidity damage, etc.  Those are bigger dangers than a minute on a
scanner bed.
