Caring for the Mentally Ill
 
The National Museum of Health and Medicine presents a film lecture program
bridging the past and the present concerns of caring for and the treatment of
the mentally ill in America.  Participants will view the 1988 film/documentary,
"Asylum" that traces the history of Saint Elizabeths Hospital in Washington,
D.C.  Gerald N. Grob, Ph.D., historian at the Institue for Health, Health Care
Policy, and Aging Research at Rutgers University will present information and
lead a discussion focusing on the question of the lessons that we might
conceivably learn from the past that might assist in shaping mental health
policy in the future.
 
This program is sponsored in part by the the D.C. Community Humanities Council,
the American Psychiatric Foundation and the National Museum of Health and
Medicine Foundation.
 
The program will be held in Russell Auditorium at the National Museum of Health
and Medicine on Thursday, February 2, 1995 at 8:00 p.m.  Seating may be limited

The Museum will have extended hours for visiting the exhibitions from 5:30 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m.  The Museum, a Department of the Armed Forces Institute of
Pathology, is located on the campus of the Walter Reeed Army Medical Center.
Visitors should enter the comlex through the Elder Street Gate of Georgia
Avenue.  Free parking is available at the Museum.
