The Mariners' Museum began using Re:discovery in January 1995, and have been
extremely pleased with the success to date. Their staff was able to import
all of our existing records from DBASE (DBF format) into their Foxpro
system, with our mapping assistance, and we have been using their system
exclusively in the Registrar's office ever since- with the collections and
curatorial staff following as they receive new Pentium computers to access
the CMS network. The firm is located in Charllottesville, VA and (hopefully
not to commercial here) can be reached at (757) 977-0641.

The Mariners' Museum has been starting a digital imaging project slowly
since I began work there over 2 years ago. We have used Kodak's Photo CD
technology - which costs us $1.50-$8.00 per image, depending on the format
of the film being scanned, but it returns to us 16,000,000 bit images, very
well suited for multi-purpose output. IE it can be printed, used on CDROM,
used on Diskette based Electronic Postcards (tm), or on the internet, as
well as on our internal CMS system. And it is stored on a gold plated CDROM
said t olast over 100 years in storage - far better than any other color
medium. We use Photoshop (the standard for almost all businesses) to
retrieve the images off of the CDROM, and to create the desired image format
and size for the particular purpose. This is the phase of the project which
the majority of the labor. In addition, a number of collection management
systems support digital images, and Re:discovery and its larger competitors
do too.

: And has anyone found a good program that allows for digitizing?
