We don't have official staff representation on the Board beyond the
Executive Director, but we do have about 60-70 contract art teaching faculty
members who are officially represented on the board.  The Education
Committee (made up of department heads and the Associate Director) submits a
list of candidates to the Board's nominating committee, who investigates
them and invites one.  This has worked out very well so far.  The standard
term is 3 years, with an option to renew for 3 more before rotating off.  We
are a private not-for-profit organization.
