Beginning in the mid-1980s, Pittsburgh's original Buhl
Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science
[1939-1991] scheduled its one and only free-of-charge
day of the year to coincide with the annual Summer
Solstice Day, the first official day of Summer [June
21]. Of course this made sense, since we had an
emphasis in Astronomy. Buhl Planetarium also scheduled
several special activities for that day; you can learn
more about our "Solstice Day" event at this link:

Since this event occurred long after most schools had
completed their school year, group visits during this
day was not an issue. So, you may want to schedule
your free night at a time when it is likely that
groups will not schedule a visit.
