Normally I do not respond to the list, but I feel that I should in this case. Kathryn do not get a masters in public history. Yes, I love history too and I also have a masters in public history, but there are no jobs right now. You've got to have a back up plan. You may be able to find something when you are finished with school, but there are hundreds of people trying to get a job in a museum or library as well and it is coming down to a matter of luck. No I am not a disgruntled underpaid public historian. I am going to apply to get my PhD. so at least I can teach what I love and volunteer in an museum, but I am lucky to do that because I married somebody with an outstanding career. I have been in musuem work for nearly ten years and just recently made it over the poverty level of earnings. I just do not want to see anymore people suffer because they have high expectations when they finish school only to find out that they too are going to have to work at a bookstore or home depot in order to make the rent.

I would encourage you to look at programs that have depth of course
offerings in your particular areas of interest. In addition, the
program should have the support of full-time history faculty who have
experience in public history professions. There are now many solid
public history programs around the country (including those that you
have heard from already) and a number of directories linking you to
these opportunities. The National Council on Public History
(www.ncph.org) is one that you might look at.
Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio launched its public history
program over 30 years ago. Our strengths are in Archives and Records
Management and Museum Studies. Our tenured and tenure-track faculty
bring experience in libraries, archives, national parks, and state and
local historical societies to public history. We also work extensively
with area museum and archives professionals to offer a wide range of
courses. We collaborate with our excellent urban studies graduate
program to offer students additional opportunities to pursue non-profit
administration courses. The Dayton area is home to the National
Museum of the U.S. Air Force, the Dayton Aviation Heritage National
Historical Park, the National Afro American Museum and many other
regional and local historical sites and organizations. We are located
between the new National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the
excellent resources of the Cincinnati Museum Center in Cincinnati and
the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus (60-75 minutes away). Our
graduate students complete internships and projects in local,
regional, state, and national organizations. Many of our students
obtain extensive hands on experience as well on contract projects, coop
jobs, and graduate assistantships in the public history field. We also
have students working with schools, Dayton Public Television, and the
Ohio Historical Society's National History Day program as part of
Public History's partnership on two major, US Department of Education
Teaching American History grant projects.
