Apologies for cross posting.

In most every home, you’ll find them boxed away on the top shelf of the closet, in the basement, in the drawer. They are our stories, told through yellowing family photos or fragile family documents.

Exactly what do you do with these family treasures? To find the answers, sign up for a one-day workshop presented by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The workshop, “Organization and Preservation of Your Family Treasures,” will be held Saturday, October 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at GSLIS, and will be taught by two experts in the areas of preservation and archival methods.

Thomas Teper, head of preservation, and Chris Prom, assistant university archivist, both of the U of I library, will discuss a number of topics including practical techniques to organize and preserve papers and photos, ways in which the environment in which items are kept can affect a collection, how to archive electronic information and digital photos, and how to seek out and find professional assistance.

By learning how to take proper care of family materials handed down through generations, or to preserve those photos you’re taking today, it will ensure that the next generation has a better understanding of their heritage.

The workshop is offered through the continuing education program at GSLIS and the registration fee is $89. To register, visit www.lis.uiuc.edu/programs/cpd/SC_Program/SCWorkshops.html or contact Marianne Steadley at 217-244-2751 or by emailing [log in to unmask]
