there is a pretty neat new peculiar hotel designed by some post modern
architect in a mid-town location with reasonable rents.  i think it is
called the paramount.  the inexpensive rooms are tiny--about twice the
size of the bed, but the whole place is a trip.

you might also try the b&b scene.  there are several agencies in nyc.
try directory assistance.  i was very pleased with my greenwich village
room a couple of years ago--for about $80 night.
