"Fear."  Oh my, I think you hit the nail on the head there. Recently I read
an interview with one of the authors of the "Left Behind" books, which
certainly propagate some of the fear...and the notion that these are the end
times has become fearsomely widespread.  I suppose, because most of these
folks don't read history, they wouldn't realize that these fears are as old
as the hills. Or the Rockies.  Then again, that's not very old.
