Hello to Forrest, David,et al: I feel its time that I stepped in and
shared information on our firm and the work that we do and specifically,
have been doing for Pretend City in CA. We are a museum services firm that
specializes in architecture, museum planning and exhibition design. A
unique feature of our firm is our Museum Services division, established in
1986, which includes museum educators (currently five) industrial and
graphic designers, architects and project managers. As one of our
specialties is working with children's museum, we came on board with the PC
project three years ago, assisting the founders with initial planning
around the theme of a museum about the built/community environment which
encompassed identification of audience, front-end evaluation with local
teachers and content review by museum professionals, development of exhibit
criteria, several drafts of exhibit scripts, and, ultimately, site selection
and schematic building and exhibition design. This was undertaken in
conjunction with the founders, various program and exhibit committees,a
consultant museum educator and local professionals in various professions
assisting with content development and clarification. Similar to Forrest's
comments, this multifacted process (one which we employ on many projects)
is extremely complesand requires a vareity of evaluative activities
(building, exhibits, programming, community needs/perception, etc.) and I
do want to stress that this is all undertaken with careful consideration
for the end-users. As PC is in the process of reviewing a new site, along
with work related to staff and program development, this is a time for them
to continue to "scan the museum horizon" for feedback on a variety of
issues. As the architecture and exhibition design firm, I do believe that
I should speak out to my colleagues to clarify our professional mission and
specifically, the carefully crafted process that has led PC to where they
are now.
