Purpose:  The primary purposes of this position are to provide vision and leadership for ORNL management for operation of the American Museum of Science & Energy. The position will identify strategies for long term viability of the museum, including transfer to community support, as well as for short term cost constraints.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Create strategic options for the Laboratory in the design of effective and efficient management systems and processes for the museum. Review development, deployment and implementation of policies, programs and services, including contracts, staffing, purchasing, and community outreach. Analyze volume and patterns of visitor traffic. Review exhibition proposals and effectiveness. Assess current cost model, and identify potential savings through increased traffic volume or through cost reduction.
- Provide internal consultation to the Laboratory's Leadership Team regarding community engagement through the museum. Identify political, financial, and public relations obstacles to strategies involving dissolution of the museum’s primary funding through the DOE. Provide benchmark data surrounding similar museums. Analyze regional market, and the role of the museum within this cultural setting. Identify strategies to collaborate with similar venues or to compete for visitor traffic.
- Assess staffing needs. Identify which skills are required for optimal operational performance under various management strategies.
- Review current contracts. Identify cost savings through vendor consolidation or improved payment terms.
- Examine exhibit financial performance through cost/benefit analyses. Evaluate exhibition value to the community through additional traffic to the exhibit, through additional revenue to local businesses, and through increased marketing of the region.
- Serve as a partner to key community partners, including local, regional, and state governmental authorities, educational institutions, other local museums, key business partners, and strategic donor partners.
- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of UT -Battelle values and ethics.

Qualifications Required:
Bachelors' degree and a minimum 10-15 years of experience in museum management and/or operations are required. Extensive experience and knowledge of museum programming, exhibitions, cost management, and community outreach is required. The successful candidate will be accomplished at building exceptionally productive relationships internally and externally and skilled at consensus building across a broad spectrum of stakeholders and interest groups with internal and external organizations, regulatory agencies, elected officials, peer groups, and the community. The candidate must have a demonstrated ability to establish strong business partnerships with line management and Laboratory staff and must have experience implementing collaborative approaches to finding solutions. The position requires an individual who has had
success in fostering teams among diverse individuals to achieve business goals. Demonstrated line management success in the development of staff at all levels of the organization is preferred.


QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:
Master’s' degree is preferred.  Experience in driving a museum to profitability, engaging in community outreach, and transitioning to a non-profit organization is preferred.


Please note this position is a temporary, full time assignment for one year, with the possibility of an extension.


Work Directions and Interfaces:
This position reports to the Director, Communications and collaborates with the Director, Creative Media for all aspects of job performance as well as task assignments and priorities.  The position works with senior managers across the Laboratory and will collaborate with managers and staff of the current museum administrator. The position also will engage local civic
leaders in surrounding cities and counties to include but not limited to Oak Ridge, Clinton, Anderson County, Campbell County, Kingston, Roane County, Lenoir City, Loudon, Loudon County, Alcoa, Maryville, Blount County, Meigs County, Monroe County, Cumberland County, Jefferson County, and Sevier County.
