We don't have anything formal (being a very small museum with a very small
shop), but we tend to the do the inviting of authors and use them as part of
our regular museum programming (e.g., book-signing, poetry-reading with
books available). Our preference is for the authors to bring their own
books to sell, but if we need to stock them ourselves we insist on being
able to return the unsold ones. We have varied success. If we can tie
the reading to a children's program or book club selection (we have one that
meets once a month) it works better. We pay the author the "usual" meager
honorarium we pay all our speakers.

Subject: Museum shop people

Are there any museum shop people out there who can share their policies with
me - particularly those museums with bookstores and how you handle authors
who want to have book signings in your museum - what is their obligation,
your costs, etc...

Thanks!
