No it's not a urban myth.  The story was on the news late last week or
early this week, I also recall it was a male Master's student, not a PhD
student, but I'm at a loss as to where it was.

I have not heard this one, but there is a remarkably similar piece of fiction
in the summer fiction issue of the New Yorker. Perhaps this is another
urban myth?
