The Catalina Island Museum invites applications for the position of
Education Coordinator.  The Catalina Island Museum is a local history
museum which preserves and interprets the cultural history of beautiful
Santa Catalina Island, approximately 24 miles off the coast of Southern
California.  The museum was founded in 1953 and currently has a staff of
eight.  Avalon has a year-round community of approximately 3,500
residents.  The local school (K-12) is part of Long Beach Unified School
District and has approximately 740 students (about 1/3 are
Spanish-speaking).  The museum receives over 50,000 visitors a year
through our exhibit galleries, and the Island receives close to a
million visitors a year from all over the world.  The Island is a
one-hour boat ride from Long Beach and San Pedro which are less than an
hour’s drive from Los Angeles.

Responsibilities for the position of Education Coordinator include:
planning, creating and implementing a wide range of programs for local
schoolchildren, visiting groups, families and adults (to include
workshops, classroom activities, exhibit gallery activities, lectures,
etc.); evaluation of programs; cultivation of professional relationships
with local teachers and school administrators; participation in regional
professional associations; participation in Island-wide education
consortium and development of collaborative programs with other Island
organizations; supervision of docents and education volunteers; active
participation on the exhibits team as a voice for our audiences;
building, using and maintaining a teaching collection of artifacts and
materials; grantwriting for departmental projects; developing and
monitoring departmental budget; promotion of educational programs and
departmental achievements through news releases to local papers and
museum newsletter; supervision of summer historic house tours; and
departmental strategic planning.

Skills/Qualifications: 2-3 years previous experience as an educator or
educational assistant in a museum or similar environment; BA/BS minimum,
MA preferred in Museum Studies, History, Education or related field;
excellent verbal and written communication skills; superb organizational
skills; ability to think and plan strategically; fluency in Spanish
preferred; previous experience in supervising volunteers.

ability to work both in teams and independently, dynamic, extrovert,
comfortable in small town environment.

Salary/Benefits: $22,984 to $26,000 depending on qualifications and
experience.  Group health insurance, unemployment compensation, paid
time off, sick leave, voluntary participation in tax deferred annuity
(no employer contribution). 40-hour work week with occasional evenings
and weekends.
