CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT:
THE ELECTRIC SCRIPTORIUM
Electronic Approaches to the Imaging, Transcription
Editing, and Analysis of Medieval Manuscript Texts
A research network sponsored by the Calgary Institute
for the Humanities and the Society for Early English
and Norse Electronic Texts (SEENET), with support from
the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of
Canada.
This research network will examine the progress of
contemporary work on the electronic presentation and
analysis of medieval manuscript texts, and contribute
to ongoing developments in this exciting field of
research. Among the topics to be investigated by the
network are the difficulties of adapting modern
electronic technology to dealing with centuries-old
texts; the strengths and shortcomings of existing
electronic methods and computer standards including
encoding standards, graphics formats, hypertext and
hypermedia, and the Internet; the difficulties editors
face when they attempt to use the electronic medium and
the rewards they find; and the practicalities of
Internet publication, electronic libraries, and other
means of access to texts. This research network will
be of interest not only to medievalists and computer
applications specialists, but also to library staff,
publishers, and scholars from any field who are
interested in the production, dissemination, and use of
electronic texts.
The research network has both electronic and physical
sessions: the electronic conversation will consist of a
moderated listserver discussion from October 17 to
November 22 and of electronic (World Wide Web) posting
of papers; a physical meeting including traditionally-
delivered conference papers and electronic
demonstrations, together with roundtable discussions
starting from the wider listserver discussion, will
take place in Calgary, Alberta, from 10 - 12 November
1995.

ACCOMODATION:
General registrants are responsible for making their own
reservations. A block of rooms is being held at the Best
Western Village Park Inn, Motel Village, 1804 Crowchild
Trail North, Calgary (403-289-0241). Reservations must
be made prior to October 30, 1995. Please inform the
Village Park Inn that you are a registrant in the
research network.

REGISTRATION:
The registration fee for the research network is $55
(Canadian funds, GST included); this fee covers reception
on November 10, entrance into the sessions, lunches on
November 11 and 12, and coffee. A reduced fee of $30
(Canadian funds, GST included) is available for students;
it covers the cost of the reception, two lunches and
coffee. Certification of student status must accompany
the registration form to qualify for these reduced rates.
University of Calgary faculty and students are invited to
drop in for individual sessions.
