I wonder why people subscribe to the digest format. I too would find it
difficult to use, for the reasons Candice gives, so I don't. But my
email software takes all the separate messages from this list and puts
them into a dedicated folder on my computer, where I can see a threaded
display and scan and follow up just the topics that interest me. It does
the same for the many other mailing lists and newsgroups to which I
subscribe. Is the software that other people use not able to do this?

The other problems arise from the way in which people send messages,
often neglecting three important points:

1. Trim unnecessary quotes from previous messages, especially the
standard text added by the mailing system, and put the bits you retain
just in front of any comments you want to make about them.

2. Provide a helpful and meaningful subject line.

3. Use the "reply" or "follow-up" function when continuing a previous
discussion, and use the "start new thread" function when starting a new
topic. "Reply" or "follow-up" puts references to previous messages into
the header of the message you are writing, so that a thread can be
constructed irrespective of the subject line. If you use these functions
when starting a new topic, your message may be lost in a thread on
something different altogether.

I'm quite happy with the list as it is!
