Yes, pay isn't much; jobs are scarce.  The encouragement, at least in art
museums, is the opportunity to work with the REAL object.  That has to
matter or the comparative sacrifices may not be worth it.  Working from
original material--archaeological, art, whatever--will give you
first-hand information and insights that you may never learn from books
and slides.  If the thrill of the actual artifact exists for you, then
museums may be worth it.  It has been for me.
