POSITION TITLE:
Contract Education Specialist

DURATION OF CONTRACT:
May 1997 through August 30, 1997

SUPPORT AND COMPENSATION:
Office will be provided for one person including access to phone, fax, e-mail and computerized word
processing and spreadsheets.  Supplies and materials related to this project are also covered in the
institutional project budget.  Payments will be made in four installments to coincide with the report
schedule.

REPORT SCHEDULE:
The museum has standard formats for lesson plans and tours.  Reports will include programs drafted in
those formats and include additional narratives where necessary.  Drafts of recommendations are due:
July 7, (two weeks before summer camp); August 30, (for teacher review and comment); and October 30,
1997, (final).

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF FUNCTIONS:
Working with the director of historic houses and the educational specialist, the contract education
specialist will review existing curriculum-based programs featuring the Moses Myers (1790-1820) and
Adam Thoroughgood (1680 - 1720) Houses, and develop new hands-on programs targeting students and
families using museum collections of 17th and 18th century American fine art, decorative arts and
architecture.  These materials will be test piloted during the department's summer camp at the end of July
and reviewed by teachers in the fall.  Summer camp will be operated by the contractor.  No other day-to-day duties are required.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Background in 17th and 18th century social history and material culture; MA in one of the following
areas: Public History, History, American Studies or Education. Familiarity with the current Standards of
Learning approved by the Board of Education for the Commonwealth of Virginia, and experience in
developing lesson plans that are interdisciplinary. Experience working with young adults in hands-on or
experiential learning based programming.

PROJECTS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED:
Review existing lesson plans and tours to add complimentary components or recommend matching with
other program areas.  Components include activities in workshop or dance, musical and theatrical
performances.  Twenty lesson plans were revised this winter to complement the state's current Standards
of Learning (SOL's). Components will take into account appropriate educational level and current
teaching strategies in museums.

Develop new hands-on programs using museum collections which will be piloted at Time Travelers
Camp.  The contractor will also manage and operate the department's summer camp.  This program is
currently in place with a curriculum that has been used with students during the 1997 school year.  The
camp is targeted for children ages 9-12 and will be offered on July 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25, 1997.
Expenses related to promotion and operation of  the program are covered in the institution's budget.

Program materials developed will be reviewed after being test piloted and drafted by the contractor into
lesson plan or tour formats.  These programs will be reviewed again by teachers in the fall.  The
contractor will be required to attend all meetings where programs are developed and reviewed to
facilitate discussion.  No more than one additional revision will be required after teacher review in the
fall.
