I have spent the last few years cataloging our photograph collection. I have
recently started scanning our collection of glass plate negatives and the HP
Scanjet series (4890+) are the only scanners on which you to scan large (8" x
10") glass plate negatives. They will also allow you to scan 16 35mm slides at
a time which is helpful if you have a lot of slides to scan.

There is no set dpi setting for scans. It depends on what the final product will
be. There are a few general guidelines, but it is better to understand how you
are manipulating the pixels to best achieve the desired results. I highly
recommend the book, "A few scanning tips" by Wayne Fulton, see
http://wwwscantips.com

I also recommend the free program Paint.Net to manipulate the scanned file. It
has a sepia feature that really enhances the old B/W photos, as well as
cropping, contrast/brightness adjustment, and color enhancement features.

Good luck and have fun!
