Our stores log books are quite simple. Everyone signs in even those who
use the store on a regular basis. However we don't computerise the
information. The idea is that it is there as a record if anything goes
wrong in which case we would go and look in the book to see who was in
the store over the relevant period.

If your being asked to keep the log book as a way of (for example)
recording how often researchers use the collection, then I would just
have a column for "purpose of visit" and then go through the book from
time to time and count up the research visits.

Subject: Storage access log

I have been asked to create a log book for access to our storage areas.
We
are a relatively small museum with three storage areas. Can anyone tell
me
about one they have created and how they manage the information? As
Collections Manager, I am in and out of storage on a regular basis.
Would I
need to keep track of my movements and those of the Exhibitions Manager?
Or
just researchers, contractors, interns and other staff? I have created
a
log book for people to sign in but this could grow quite large in a
year.
Would I transfer this information to the computer on a regular basis?
Hope
someone can give me some direction.

Thanks!
