For the Attention of Alex McKee:

I refer Ms. McKee to the following publications for collections maintenance,
including furniture and silver polishing:

* Hermione Sandwith and Sheila Stainton's "The National Trust Manual of
Housekeeping" (1991) provides an extensive overview of Historic Collections
management, particularly in reference to Historic House museums.

* Sherry Butcher-Younghans' "Historic House Museums" (1993) also gives a
good overview of basic "dos" and "donts".

* Robert F. McGiffin, Jr.'s "Furniture Care and Conservation" (1983)
provides more invasive treatments for furniture "polishing".

* National Committee to Save America's Cultural Collections' "Caring for
your Collections" (1992) gives both technical and practical information. A
must read.

* Simon Knell's "Care of Collections" in the Leicester Readers in Museum
Studies series gives the British perspective on this subject. I highly
recommend this series for any museum, American or otherwise.

I hope that subscribers may find a new source to consult in the above list.

Furniture Historian
