Andy,

Thanks for the info. I already have the collections locations in a database, but am hoping to make it easier to decide if something has more room -- we have four sizes of standard boxes so I can tell by the location information what size box it is. having something visual will make it easier than having to get the key to the cabinet and physically looking to confirm the space is allocated.

Cheers,

Marybeth

Marybeth

The software that we use here at KU for our natural history collections, Specify (www.specifysoftware.org<http://www.specifysoftware.org>) and that is used by over 400 collections worldwide has a storage tree that is used to store all information about storage location of objects. It functions on a true parent-child relationship so that the parent of a room is a building etc. At any level you can also get the tree to report to you how many collection objects are represented at that level and so if you had a level called shelf, you could get a total of the number of collection objects that are contained on that shelf. This would not give you a true value for amount of space available but you could have an additional field indicating the size of each object that would give you more detail.

Hope that helps

Andy

Subject: interactive map of storage locations

Good morning all,

I am thinking about creating an interactive map of my storage locations, so that I could click on a location and find out if there is any room left in that cabinet. Has anyone tried something like this or have any ideas about what software would be best suited for the task?

Welcome to any ideas; please share either on-list or off.

Thanks.
