Position Overview:
The Marion County Historical Society is currently seeking an Education 
Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator to guide the Historical Society’s education 
and volunteer programs. This 20-30+ hour per week position, 12:00-4:00pm 
Tuesday – Saturday with some pre-arranged morning hours, also includes some 
basic office duties. Applicants should have a college degree, or equivalent 
professional experience, public speaking/teaching abilities and general 
computer skills. The MCHS Education Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator 
should enjoy working with a variety of people of all ages, have a sense of 
humor and a desire to share local history with others.

This position requires applicants to pass criminal background and drug 
tests, maintain a valid Oregon drivers license and sometimes carry 
educational materials weighing up to 20 pounds. Desktop publishing and 
website experience are encouraged but not required. $12.00-$13.50 per hour 
with paid sick/vacation benefits. The Education Outreach & Volunteer 
Coordinator is supervised by the Executive Director-Archivist.

MCHS Overview:The Marion County Historical Society (MCHS) was established in 
1950 to preserve and interpret the cultural history of Marion County. As one 
of Oregon’s earliest historical societies, MCHS began publishing a variety 
of journals and books in 1955. Throughout the 1960s the Historical Society 
championed the preservation of the Jason Lee House and Methodist Parsonage, 
Thomas Kay Woolen Mill and Historic Deepwood Estate. In 1984 MCHS opened a 
museum and research library in the former Thomas Kay Woolen Mill Retail 
Store at Mission  Mill Museum. MCHS was honored for excellence in local 
history by the American Association for State and Local History in 1999. In 
2005 MCHS established an Education Outreach Program to local schools which 
was honored with the Heritage Education Award by the Mission Mill Museum 
Association in 2007.

Position Responsibilities:
Work with the Executive Director-Archivist to prepare, promote, schedule and 
present 45-60+ minute educational programs, on Marion County history, for 
elementary and middle school students,      adults and seniors.
Help recruit, schedule and train volunteers to work on a variety of projects 
and programs at MCHS including quarterly publications.
Assist MCHS patrons with admission, basic research requests and publication 
purchases. Maintain and update membership records and complete other office 
tasks as needed.

attn. Education Outreach-Volunteer Coordinator Selection Committee by 
Saturday  August 18th, 2007 at 4:00pm. Upon receipt, applicants will be sent 
an application form which needs to be completed and returned to MCHS by 
Thursday August 23rd, 2007 at 4:00pm. MCHS is open Tuesday-Friday 
12:00-4:00pm to accept applications. Submission of representative work 
samples is encouraged but not required.
