I have been reading this thread and have had, like yourselves, many situations of unruly children. BUT I have had at least an equal number of adults and seniors with totally inappropriate behavior as well. Old ladies love to handle quilts, gentlemen try on precious old top hats, dismantle mechanical devices and teachers sit on furniture--with no regard for barriers. If children are controlled by parents or teachers, perhaps it is because they have so few boundaries and little consequence for actions. We have become a simply impolite and brash society in the name of freedom and political correctness.

Hi Ashley,

I'm a Collections Manager who's refered to as Curator of Collections by my employer (a healthcare system). When my positon was created, their logic for my title was that "Collections Manager" sounded like I was going to be managing the collection of past due payments. Semantics are such fun - best of luck to you.

Good Afternoon,

Recently, we were informed that our job title would be changing from Curator of Collections to something that is better suited to what we actually do. Our job is actually Collections Manager, but because we work for the City, we cannot be called a Manager. What I would like to know is are there any other Collections Managers out there that aren't called Collections Managers? If so, what is your title?

Thank you in advance,

Ashley

Good Afternoon Ashley,
1.	Pardon my ignorance, but what is wrong with using the term Curator? The term curator may be specific enough with museum work for your job title change request to fly under the radar. What do I mean? .......consider this...............when dealing with the HR Department of a government agency, be careful in the use of the terms director, administrator, manager, coordinator, etc...
2.	For example, where I am now (a city government & private/non-profit contracted partnership).... the following terms have very specific meanings -- here are just a few:
	2.1	"Director" (is appointed by the Mayor) and is the museum system's Director;
	2.2	"Administrator" (works under the Director and is not appointed by the Mayor) and manages several departments within the museum system;
	2.3	"Manager" -- manages a single museum department (supervises full &/or part-time staff, administers budgets and resources);
	2.4	"Specialist" (a.k.a. Registrar, Conservator, Curator) -- performs professional duties, but does not supervise staff and does not have budget preparation, monitoring, and administration duties;
	2.5	"Coordinator" -- performs para-professional duties......
3.	When HR uses these terms, please be advised that the approved term will affect the pay grade..... so, be sure that prior to submitting to HR the job title, it is important to "de-code" your HR department's use and the impact of using various job titles.........
I hope this helps.
Best Wishes,
Wesley

New Certificate in Art Collections Management, Registration and Display -
New York University

Dear Colleagues:

For those of you who have been inquiring as to where to obtain training in
registration and Collections Management, I'm delighted to announce a new
professional Certificate in Art Collections Management, Regisgtration and
Display that I've developed with New York University's School of Continuing
& Professional Studies (SCPS), launching this September 2011.

This Certificate opens up a wide range of career opportunities in museums,
auction houses, galleries and private and corporate art collections. With
the expansion and growth of the global art and artifact market, there is a
growing need for trained specialists with the abilities to manage, display,
install, handle and care for diverse collections. The Certificate in Art
Collections Management and Display includes course work in art handling and
registration methods; documentation and collections management policies;
basic conservation and preservation; and examination and installation of
works of art and artifacts. Students will gain the expert-level
understanding and technical knowledge to work with collections of any size
and medium. Instructors include Stefanii Ruta Atkins, Head Registrar at the
Museum of Modern Art; Chuck Agro, Manager of Packing and Art Services at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, myself, and other specialists.

This new certificate program joins a series of very successful professional
art certificate programs at NYU that each year trains hundreds of students
to enter a new arts profession or to advance within their existing
professional positions. Enrollment will begin on-line in July, or contact
Terry Shtob, Ph.D. Director, Arts, Humanities and Writing Programs, NYU
School of Continuing & Professional Studies 726 Broadway, 6th floor, New
York, NY 10003, 212-998-7253, for course fees and to register.

In the meantime, please feel free to contact me with any questions you might
have. I look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you at NYU in
September.

Subject: Show us your uniforms--Win a paver!

Hi all,

The Golisano Childrens Museum of Naples is set to open in the winter of
2012 in Naples, FL, and we need some advice about uniforms!

Currently, we are trying to decide what our staff uniform policy should
consist of. There are two central questions that we are investigating: 1.
What should staff uniforms look like (as opposed to volunteers)? 2. When
should staff be called upon to wear uniforms?

To research this, wed like to ask fellow listservers the following
questions:

1) What is YOUR museums staff uniform policy?

2) What do your staff uniforms look like? Please, provide pictures!!

Here is some buy-in. Wed like to open this up as a competition! We will
look at all of the pictures and policies given, and our favorite
contestants museum will be awarded a free 8x8 engraved paver that will go
into the sidewalk surrounding the Golisano Childrens Museum of Naples
(Cmon). So, you can help out a fellow fledgling non-profit and get a prize
in the process!

If you are interested in helping us at Cmon (and would like the opportunity
to win a free paver for your museum or organization), please email us
DIRECTLY at this address: [log in to unmask]

Thank you, and good luck!

The Golisano Childrens Museum of Naples will be Collier Countys first
learning environment devoted exclusively to childs play, the serious
business of discovery that helps children attain hallmark milestones on the
journey into adulthood. Cmon will be a 30,000-square-foot museum for
families located in the North Collier Regional Park. Scheduled to open in
2012, the Golisano Childrens Museum of Naples is envisioned to be one of
the finest childrens museums in the United States and will be fully
accessible to all children regardless of their physical or learning
abilities. To learn more about Cmon, visit www.cmon.org.

The mission of the *Golisano Children's Museum of Naples* is to provide an

Subject: Children in Museums

A close friend of mine (married, childless I should add) brought the
following to the attention of another list serve . I thought I would share
it and see how others deal with this or don't. Let the controversy begin..

My wife and I visit historic sites, museums and events. It seems that the
experience is often spoiled by the unruly behavior of children - from babies
crying to adolescents being...well...adolescent!

The concept of exposing children to historic and cultural things seems
wonderful in theory. Indeed, many sources for funding insist institutions
include kid-friendly components as a requisite for consideration. But I have
to wonder if in practice that the average child - for whatever reasons -
doesn't get anything out of the experience and often only ruins it for the
adults who actually appreciate the opportunity.

I know not every child is like this - I was always a history geek, even when
I was little. But several encounters with both individual families and
school groups at events and exhibits have made me question how we approach
this.

Now don't shoot the messenger, I have my thoughts as both an educator and
museum professional. I wanted to see what others think or do. Then ill post
mine in a few days

Peace

Jim

Hello:

As a parent I completely agree with your friends comments. But not only historic sites but art galleries even more so. The problem is not with the children but with poor parenting. How one addresses it....I would suggest for a museum to have posted behavior rules and for them to be enforced.

Museums and historic sites should be for all to appreciate, value and respect.

Hi James,

I've had the unfortunate experience of working at an event where a child was
rolling around the art gallery with a pair of those sneakers with wheels on
them. Not only was I worried about the artworks, I also knew that there was
a possibility that she could trip and fall on the uneven floor. No one was
saying anything! I finally couldn't take it any longer and I went up to the
kid and told them to stop. I also told the mom that she needed to control
her child.

I still feel that was the right thing to do. I must have reached a boiling
point, because I have no trouble telling adults and children how they should
act in a museum/gallery. I agree with Noel-- the parents need to set a good
example. Museums and historical sites have been essential to my development
as a young professional, and I would hate for anyone's experience to be
marred by a cell phone or an unruly kid. Museum guards do a great job when
they're around, as well as undercover tattletails like myself.

Subject: When is it acceptable to apply for jobs?

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to figure out when it is an okay time to start applying for jobs.
I'm graduating in December with a BA in Anthropology and after some research
found out that some times the process between submitting the application to
being even looked at can take up to a month so I was wondering if it was
acceptable to submit applications about a month before graduation or if I
should wait until I have the degree officially.

Thanks!

Take to the tomb of the unknown and see how even the youngest is treated for environmentally inappropriate behavior. Think some child behavior is acceptable and should be tolerated. Some is bad parenting and should be addressed in a nice polite way like the rules are being broken please follow the rules.
