Director of Development and External Relations
The Director of Development and External Relations, working closely with
the Director of the Museum, plans, organizes, and implements a coherent and
effective fund raising and external relations program for the Museum,
including major gifts, planned giving, annual giving, and a
marketing/public relations program. The Director of Development and
External Relations reports directly to the Director of the Museum.

Development
Develops strategies for and cultivates relationships with potential
individual donors, corporations, foundations, and grant-making agencies.
Has particular responsibility for development of a major gifts program.
Positions the Director of the Museum with regard to all specific requests
for funding, including coordination of background research. Works with
members of the Museum staff to coordinate solicitation of donors for
specific programs, including exhibitions, educational programs, and
publications.

Plans and implements a National Advisory Committee in support of the Museum
of Art.

Develops and implements an effective strategy for a major building and
endowment campaign, in coordination with the University's larger campaign
efforts. Maintains an effective working relationship and coordinates
activities with the University's central development office and with
Development Officers in other units.

Provides overall guidance to the Museum's annual giving and membership
programs, including special events and social gatherings to cultivate and
recognize donors and to develop new audiences and sources of support.

Oversees Museum's grant writing activities.

External Relations
Works closely with the Director and with other members of the Museum staff
to ensure that the Museum and its programs are effectively presented to the
public. Develops and implements a marketing plan for the Museum, including
leading the Museum's Marketing Team. Oversees the Museum's public relations
activities, and works to position the Museum effectively within the local,
regional, and national communities. The Director of Development and
External Relations must be an effective spokesperson for the Museum.

Administration
The Director of Development supervises a Development Officer who is in turn
responsible for the coordination of the Museum's Friends program and the
annual giving effort. Other positions supervised include a Development
Assistant, a Publications Manager/Editor, and a Publicist. The position
also supervises freelance grant writers as needed.

Skills and Experience
Required:
        Substantial fundraising/external relations background and
experience, appreciation/knowledge of the visual arts, B.A. degree,
management and leadership skills, demonstrated strength in written and oral
communications, excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work
comfortably with donors and prospects, computer literacy.

Desired:
        Development experience in a university context.
        Graduate-level degree (e.g. MBA).
