this is an interesting subject for some of us

I work for an art handling company in NYC. We're non-union. This
weekend we're installing a art show at Javits Center, which is a union
hall. Since the Teamsters are involved we have negotiated some
interesting procedure.

All non-art materials are unloaded from our trucks by union members,
even on mixed shipments. (we convinced them that we're specialists,
which is why we can move the art).
A union carpenter has to unscrew any and all crates. (we're taping
them shut instead of using screws to save time while the crates are
empty during the show).
...and on and on...we're going to have a union rep on hand during the
whole show to settle any problems that come up. If a serious problem
comes up, we have 2 state police officers too.

I wish that there was an art handlers union.

By the way, part of the resolution for the MoMA strike was that they
dissolve their own union and join a larger electrition's union.
Actually, I'm not sure about what type of union it was; but it was
unrelated to their field and the type was agreed upon based on the
Rockafeller's (founders and funders of MoMA) relationship to a large
union.

Happy inflatable Rats for all of us who work w/o protection!
