The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of
Victoria on southern Vancouver Island is offering the following
three-day workshop. Please let us know if you'd like to receive
registration and accommodation information:

~~~~ Linking Communities and Museums ~~~~~~
Museum directors, curators, and programmers are experiencing profound
shifts in their relationships with communities as public funding
diminishes and diverse interest groups seek greater involvement in the
preservation of their cultural heritage. This workshop examines the
complex factors which are reshaping ways in which communities and
museums interact, and provides you with strategies to build more
meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships. You are encouraged
to consider your own institution and programs in light of:
 - the nature, role, and changing expectations of communities
 - issues of perspective, ownership, representation, and expertise
 - the meaning and management of effective partnerships
 - the three 'P's' of new museum work: People, Power, Process
 - beyond advisory committees - new approaches to governance and
power sharing
 - principles and strategies for co-curating
 - approaches to community cultural planning
Instructors: Greg Baeker is a specialist in community cultural
planning with a background in museums and public policy and Lynette
Harper is an adult educator with extensive experience in museum and
community partnerships
Dates: June 4 - 6
Please register by: May 9
Fee: $290 Canadian funds, non-credit only
Travel: Victoria is easily accessible by air or ferry from both
Vancouver and Seattle
Accommodation: Program staff are pleased to provide you with
on-campus and off-campus alternatives. On-campus options start as low
as $38.00 Canadian / night for residence accommodation, and $61.00 +
tax/night for bed & breakfast hotel rooms.
