We have been using HP scanners for several years now with very good
results. The flatbed scanner I'm most familiar with is their ScanJet
5200C, but I would expect any of their imaging products to give good
results. HP also has a scanner for 35 mm slides and negatives, the
PhotoSmart S20, which will do up to 2400 dpi. If you're planning to use
these photos in publications you might need even higher resolution, but
this one is quite satisfactory for images that are to be used for archival
purposes, PDF files, or web pages.

Both scanners run satisfactorily under Windows NT, and mesh in nicely with
software such as Adobe Photoshop Photoshop and Microsoft PhotoDraw that can
accept input directly from the scanner. We had a bit of trouble at first
with the flatbed's software refusing to work for any user ID but the
administrative one that had been used to install it, but were able to
resolve it. The film scanner's software is overly cute for my taste - it
has large buttons but no text menu - but once you get used to which button
does what it is reasonably easy to use.
