I know the Memphis Zoo used timed tickets when they first opened their new 
China/panda exhibit.  I have no idea how they planned it all, but as a 
visitor I thought it went very smoothly and I appreciated not having to 
"fight" around in a large crowd.  The timed tickets definitely made it the 
exhibit easy and very accessible to everyone.
