Sorry for the cross posting but when I tried to send a response to the email address that came through, it kept coming back
as a changed address. I am sending it through Child-Muse and Museum –l to see if it can get through to Diana.

Diana:
Yes the articles are still available. Some are in the Collective Vision Starting and Sustaining a Children's Museum. The
book can be purchased directly from AYM. Most of the articles have been upgraded somewhat as people have asked for
clarifications.
Articles available are:
1. Process of Selecting an Architect/Engineer or Exhibit Designer Fabricator
2. Initial Checklist for museum profiles
3. Sample Request for Proposals (RFP)
4. AYM Children's Museum Survey (February 1996): Results and Analysis
5. What is a design Team and why do I need one?
6. Where do I go from here? The Design Process 2.Architectural
7. Where do I go from here? The Design Process 3.Exhibits
8. Where do I go from here? Issues involved in the adapting an existing building into a Children's museum. "Beware of the
Trojan Horse"
9. Still in the works is "the seven steps to build or expand a Children's Museum".
I believe from your query you want item #8. Let me know and I will send you a copy. Just remember one thing NOT ALL GIFTS
TURN OUT TO BE A REAL GIFT!
I am a firm believer that any building can be converted into a Children's Museum but at what cost! I don't necessarily mean
physical dollar cost but also programming cost. Will the building meet you museum's goals and objectives. You must define
your program and let the program define your building needs. The building shape, location, access, identity and it's
potential to meet the "Museum Experience associated with Children's museums are a must to consider. The program is your road
map. If you do not know where you are going you can get lost easily. This is all part of the "Trojan Horse" make sure there
are no hidden agendas that cannot be corrected. Up front dissecting of the existing building and site can reveal it's true
worth as a museum.
What's the old saying about automobiles on TV? Pay them now or pay them even more later. Know what you are getting into.
Unfortunately even the best plan still has it's troubles when uncovering elements in existing buildings. When dealing with
existing buildings there are always hidden suprises. The more you know up front the smaller the hidden problems.

I hope you are planning to attend Interactivity 2001 in St. Louis May 2, through 5th. Tim Goets Executive director of the
Greensboro Children's museum and Jeanie Stahl VP. Of White oaks Associates will chair the Start-Up Preconference. This
session will deal directly with many of the questions that I am sure you are asking yourself now.
If you are in a start up mode I would highly recommend that several of your group attend.
I will also be attending the start-up Preconference as I was the Design Architect for Greensboro. I will also be presenting
at some of the round tables discussions. One of the round tables last year dealt directly with museums in the expansion mode
and there queries on what buildings make better children's Museums. If several people would like to go over that same query
again I would be more than happy to represent it in St. Louis.

>We are in the process of trying to start a Children's Museum and have >been offered an old multi story department store
building at a reduced >rate. It is in bad need of repair and I am not sure if it is a good >deal or not, especially when you
consider initial cost and repair >cost. An associate of mine remembers seeing an article on "What >building types make the
best Children's Museum" at the AYM conference >in Baltimore. After some research your name came up as the possible >editor
of the article. We did find an article that you did and the >"Don't put the cart before the horse" made us all stop and
think.
>Is the article and others that you might have concerning Children's >Museums still in print and can we get a copy of them?
>Thanks Diana
