Byrony --

The French artist Robert Tatin (1902-1983) buillt an amazing "environment"
which he eventually expanded to include museum exhibition space for his own
work.  He is buried nearby (on the property, I think, but not IN the
museum).  The site is called La Frenouse and it's located in
Cosse-le-Vivien, near Laval (west-central France).  There are wonderful
pictures and a brief description in "Self-Made Worlds" by Roger Manley and
Mark Sloan (Aperture).  The actual site is open to the public, and is WELL
worth a short trip off the beaten track:  reflecting pool, mosaics, stairs
leading nowhere, mammoth concrete creatures guarding entrances . . . plus,
of course, Tatin's paintings in the galleries hidden inside this complex.
