"Play sand" is not usually the clean white sand you are thinking of. It is
usually of mixed size and material, often just washed aggregate sand.

Silica sand on the other hand, sold in numbered grades and used primarily as
a grout filler and sandblasting agent, is a much cleaner and more stable
material. All masonry suppliers and most hardware stores will carry silica
sand. A fine grade (a higher number is a smaller diameter grain, 100 being
very fine, and 60 being more common and about the coarseness of granulated
sugar) may make the most readily shaped bed.
