Assistant Cataloger

The Japanese American National Museum is the first museum in the United States
expressly dedicated to sharing the experiences of American’s of Japanese ancestry. The
National Museum seeks an Assistant Cataloger for the Hirasaki National Resource
Center & Collections Unit.

The Assistant Cataloger will undertake the integrated cataloging of the National
Museum’s diverse holdings – videotapes, oral history materials, and bibliographic and
non-bibliographic materials- in compliance with emerging standards for museum
description. Cataloging efforts will initially focus on the National Museum’s diverse and
extensive holdings in the Hirasaki National Resource Center.
Masters in Information and Library Studies from an A.L.A accredited institution required.
Knowledge of and experience with AACR2r, LC, AAT, TGMI subject headings, and
LC Classification. Familiarity with Questor ARGUS preferred. At least one year of
experience in related field, ability to multi-task and prioritize, excellent organizational skills
and be detail oriented. Ability to work in a team-environment, be a self-starter and have
excellent communication and negotiation skills. Reading knowledge of Japanese preferred.
Interest in current trends and developments in cataloging, metadata standards, and
information retrieval. Computer literate, Internet savvy, and experience with MS Word,
Excel, and FileMaker Pro preferred.
