** Elton's sale - everything must go

** Smithsonian settles asbestos lawsuit
An outside consultant urged improvements in the Smithsonian Institution's
handling of asbestos in its buildings, calling for changes in procedures and
training, and inspections to locate the toxic substance throughout the
sprawling museum complex

Gaspare Spatuzzo, who was imprisoned in 1997 on multiple counts of murder
and turned informer last year, has told magistrates that Filippo Graviano, a
Mafia boss for whom he was a hitman, told him in 1999 in prison that the
painting was eaten by rats and pigs, and so was burnt

** Killer petunias and murderous potatoes
Scientists from the Natural History Museum and the Royal Botanic Gardens,
Kew, say that carnivorous behaviour in plants is far more widespread than
previously thought, with many common plants, such as petunias, part way to
being 'meat eaters'

** Artist Creating Museum Explosion
The artist, who has assured the Philadelphia Museum of Art no permanent
damage will be done by the explosion, said his "Fallen Blossoms" show will
run through March
** Ancient Pacific islanders brought to light
When a team of archaeologists began excavating an old coral reef in Vanuatu
in 2008 and 2009, they soon discovered it had served as a cemetery in
ancient times

According to a study by the National Endowment for the Arts, only 22.7
percent of Americans made a visit to a museum during 2008, down from a not
altogether more impressive figure of 26.5 percent in 2008

Australian scientists have discovered an octopus in Indonesia that collects
coconut shells for shelter - unusually sophisticated behaviour that the
researchers believe is the first evidence of tool use in an invertebrate
animal

A huge, rare deep-blue diamond known as the Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond will
join the other gems at the National Museum of Natural History for seven
months next year
