Alicia,

If you have not already done so, you may want to contact the Japan Society
for help in finding a place you could volunteer.  They may have some ideas.
Their website is at http://www.jpnsoc.org/OPEN.HTM

Also, the Agency of Cultural Affairs under the Ministry of Education has a
website is at http://www.bunka.go.jp/index-e.html

I am not sure, but I think there was a US division of the Agency of Cultural
Affairs in Washington, D.C.  You can probably find that out through the
Japanese Embassy website.
