This is the first traveling exhibition to explore the significant historical impact
merengue music has had on the visual arts in the Dominican Republic.
Organized by the Centro Cultural Eduardo Leon Jimenes, the exhibition
identifies merengue as an essential element in the life and culture of the
island. Forty-seven works by 27 classical and contemporary artists—
paintings, works on paper, photographs, sculpture and video, as well as
popular graphics, video documentaries, and an illustrated timeline panel—
reveal the evolving artistic styles practiced by Dominican artists to interpret
the island’s most important musical and dance form. Curated by Sara
Hermann, Visual Arts Specialist, Centro Leon in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
