Any museum considering fire suppression should investigate the new
high-pressure water mist fire suppression systems. They extinguish fires
by "fogging" the building. Atifacts in the building or room will get
damp, but not soaked, so permanent damage can be avoided. One
manufacturer can be found at www.hi-fog.com. These systems are just
getting established in cultural facilities in the US, but each year sees
more museums installing them. They are still initially somewhat more
expensive than conventional water sprinkler systems, but the obvious
advantages can certainly outweigh the additional costs. We have worked
with the Fire Safety Network of the Heritage Protection Group, Nick
Artim, Director. He could inform you as to historic houses and museums
that have installed the mist system and answer specific questions. email
