Re: Writing Samples

The type of writing samples that you submit for a prospective position will
depend on the nature of the position itself. A person applying for a job in
fund raising/advancement needs to demonstrate grant writing ability and
should submit language from a grant he or she composed. A person applying
for a curator position, meanwhile, will submit samples of his or her public
writing -- label and text panel copy, for instance. Someone applying for a
job in registration or archives, lastly, would submit examples of catalog
witing or inventories for archival collections that they have processed. You
might also submit any articles or other publications that you have in the
field.

This poses an interesting dilemma for those not yet in a museum who are
applying for their first job and do not have the above mentioned writing
samples. In such cases, simply submit a graduate research paper. This at
least lets your prospective employer know that you have the potential to
communicate in a written format -- which is really what your future boss
wants to know.

I know that my friend is in the process of having to present "writing
samples" as part of his job hunt. He has been including catalogue entries,
extended wall labels, and short essays. If you have not published anything
yet, perhaps a very solid graduate school paper, and of course, a flawless
coverletter. One time, the interviewers gave him something to edit that was
along the lines of the project that he was interviewing for, and they paid
him to do it.

Good luck and I look forward to this discussion.
