Dear Listers,

I have been asked to investigate whether any other museums or like-minded institutions have image reproduction policies that require institutional control (or at least a sign-off) over the *content* of the publication in which the image is being reproduced. Do any of you have policies that specifically address this issue (whether you require approval or don't)? If you are willing to share them, please contact me at my work e-mail address: [log in to unmask]

For those of you without policies, do you think that it reflects poorly on an organization to have its name appear as a source of images in a publication that might have inaccuracies or insensitive information? My feeling is that authors and publishers should be (and in the academic community, generally are) held accountable for the content of their books, not the institutions whose images are used in them, but I would be interested to hear different opinions. Also, do you think it is worth the staff time that it would take to handle this type of requirement?

Any thoughts or comments are welcome.

Thanks,
Catherine Dean
